The Body of Another was written as a response to Dolly Parton's Jolene.
I wanted to take a nuanced look into what it might be like to be the other woman; for the character in the song to watch the destruction she is causing, while knowing that there's nothing she can do to stop it because she's so blindsided by love.
In this interpretation, she is both apologising for, and justifying her actions.
lyrics
Forgive me, what I've become
I’ve watched you unravel, come undone
And how can you ask me to wait?
When I’m pulled by a fierce wind, destruction in my wake
You see, I think about him all the time,
And I have to make him mine
You see, I think about you all the time
But I’m blindsided, I’m blindsided
The body of another, embodying his lover
Set fire to her bed, and night after night she wept
But it’s not my concern, no -
I’m pulled by the light , I’m holy - I’m broken too
You see, I think about him all the time,
And I have to make him mine
You see, I think about you all the time
But I’m blindsided, I’m blindsided
Is there a way to be good?
Is there a way to be good?
Is there a way to be good again?
Cos I’m blindsided
Oh, Blindsided
You see, I think about him all the time,
And I have to make him mine
You see, I think about you all the time
But I’m blindsided, I’m blindsided
